Facebook status update character limit dwarfs Twitter!

Facebook character limit graph

If you’ve ever had the urge to just ramble on in a status update, Facebook is the place to do it. With a status update character limit of 63,206, it vastly outnumbers the 140 character limit of Twitter.

Timeline of growth:

  • Inception = 160
  • March 2009 = 420
  • July 2011 = 500
  • September 2011 = 5000
  • November 2011 = 63206

Was this growth in response to user demand or does it foretell of more upcoming changes to the Facebook stream and layout once again? (Could this be signaling the end of Notes? a not-widely used, nor updated feature.) Either way, I doubt I’ll ever come close to that limit. How close have you come?
